PITTSBURGH – Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC announced on Tuesday the club had signed Riverhounds Development Academy product Anders Bordoy to a USL Academy contract for the 2023 season, allowing Bordoy to train and play with the Riverhounds’ First Team in both the USL Championship and Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup this season while maintaining his NCAA eligibility.

The 18-year-old defender is a senior at Kiski Area High School, and has trained in the Hounds Academy since 2014, developing under the guidance of the Academy staff. He is a current player on the club’s 2004-05 Boys ECNL team and has featured on the Riverhounds’ USL Academy League team each of the past two summers. He also was selected as an all-state player last fall playing for Kiski Area.

“We are delighted to see Anders develop into a player that now has the opportunity to sign for our professional team,” said Scott Gibson, Director of the Riverhounds Academy. “Upon inception of the Riverhounds Academy in 2007, our vision was to provide a pathway for our young players to develop through the Academy into the First Team.

“Our goal is to see more homegrown Pittsburgh players get this opportunity, and our Academy staff is working hard with our First Team staff to make this dream a reality. The hard work starts now for Anders, but we are confident in his ability, and we know he will help inspire more young players that the pathway from the Academy to the First Team is in place.”

With his signing, Bordoy is the second player to join the Hounds’ First Team on a USL Academy contract after Wyatt Borso, who was with the Hounds from 2021-22. Bordoy is also the first player signed to the Hounds having played on teams in the RDA program since the youngest competitive age groups, first suiting up for the Hounds when he was only nine years old.

“Our Academy coaches have done a great job in preparing Anders for this opportunity with the First Team, and Anders has come into the group and earned his contract. He is technically very solid, can play under pressure and is eager to learn,” said Riverhounds Head Coach Bob Lilley. “We will work hard to speed up his growth in our environment, and we will continue to track him with the hope that he develops into a future pro.”

Bordoy first entered training with the Hounds’ First Team last summer as one of the players chosen to practice with the pros as part of the club’s Pathway Program. He rejoined training with the First Team during this preseason, and with his signing, he will be eligible for selection in USL Championship matches beginning this weekend.
