Indy Eleven, Queensboro FC to Meet in Academy Playoffs Final

Matchups set for final day of action after group stage concludes

TAMPA, Fla. – Indy Eleven and Queensboro FC will meet in the Final of the 2021 USL Academy Playoffs on Sunday night at Al Lang Stadium as each topped its respective group with three wins out of three following the group stage held at the Waters Sportsplex on Saturday.

The current and future USL Championship club’s top prospects will square off at 6:30 p.m. ET at the venue which last weekend hosted the 2021 USL Championship Final. All of the action will be available live on the USL Academy YouTube channel.

Indy Eleven advanced to the Final as winner of Group B as it wrapped up its group stage with a 2-0 victory against the Charlotte Independence that saw Diego Rodriguez and Kabiru Gafar score in either half. Gafar’s goal was his third of the tournament, tied for the tournament lead, while Alann Torres has recorded two goals and two assists in three games.

Queensboro FC wrapped up its group stage with a 2-1 comeback victory against Southern Soccer Academy that saw Nick Wilson and Caleb Taylor score second-half goals to finish on top of Group A. QBFC has been led so far by forward Damien Barker, who is tied for the tournament lead with three goals in the group stage, with the club having led the tournament with eight goals overall through the group stage.

USL Academy Playoffs Third Place Game – New Mexico United vs. Charlotte Independence

New Mexico United claimed second place in Group A as it played to a 1-1 draw against Weston FC on the final day of the tournament to end ahead of Weston on goal differential in the lone drawn game in the group stage. New Mexico took the lead in the 11th minute through Taylor Rogers off an assist by Cristian Nava, and while Weston hit back seven minutes into the second half as John Delionado found the net the Florida side was unable to find a winner to jump past United and finished in third position.

The Independence fell in its final game of the group stage to Indy Eleven, but had already claimed victories against San Antonio FC and AC Connecticut to guarantee a top-two finish in the Group B standings. Charlotte features Blake Pope, who competed in the Championship this season for the club’s First Team, with Christian Cook having recorded a pair of goals to lead the side and Jefferson Amaya having scored the lone goal in a 1-0 win against San Antonio FC on Friday.

USL Academy Playoffs Fifth Place Game – San Antonio FC vs. Weston FC

San Antonio FC claimed victory to round out its group stage as Jason Sukow scored the only goal in a 1-0 win against AC Connecticut to earn victory in Group B. SAFC features a collection of players who have previously been signed to USL Academy contracts at the Championship level, including goalkeeper Jude Bosshardt, defenders Roman Holt and Brad Dildy and forward Abraham Lincon, and has also seen professional signing Leo Torres feature over the course of the week’s action in midfield.

Weston FC finished in third place after ending in a 1-1 draw against New Mexico United in its final group game as John Delionado leveled in the second half after the side trailed at halftime. The Florida side has seen Giancarlo Dostillo record a goal and assist in the group stage, while Elan Romo recorded the game-winner in a 2-1 victory against Southern Soccer Academy to open the tournament on Thursday.

USL Academy Playoffs Seventh-Place Game – AC Connecticut vs. Southern Soccer Academy

AC Connecticut fell in its final group stage game on San Antonio FC on Saturday, but the side has seen some bright performances across the week as it heads into its final outing. Fisher Mills has recorded a pair of goals for the side – both coming in a thrilling contest against the Charlotte Independence on the opening day – while Joseph Everett and Brio Aslan have also found the net.

Southern Soccer Academy was unable to hold a halftime lead as it fell 2-1 in its final group game against Group A winner Queensboro FC despite a first-half goal by Fabien Rodriguez. The goal was Rodriguez’s second of the tournament, while Antonio Reyes has also found the net for the side as it looks to end its week in Florida on a positive note on Sunday.
