Colombia natives are both making their mark in the Academy at one of the USL Championship's newest clubs

When a USL Championship expansion club in Queens, New York was announced in 2019, the team immediately had a fan in Juan Cruz. After showcasing his abilities at a Queensboro FC II tryout, he went from being a fan of the club to a player too. Now the 19-year-old is making his mark as a goalkeeper for its USL Academy squad while his older sister, Diana, is making an impact on the club in the Front Office. As the Team Administrator, Diana uses her skillset built from being a student athlete to support the club’s coaches and players in any way she can.

The siblings joined the USL’s Maury Urcadez to talk about their upbringing in Colombia and how their unbreakable bond grew even stronger through their work with QBFC.

Q: How would you describe your relationship as siblings?

DIANA: I think we always got along well. He is also the baby of the house. So, we were always taking care of him and guiding him and always expecting the best out of him and supporting him. But yes, sometimes there would be fights.

JUAN: I think we see our relationship as supporting each other because we are athletes, and we understand each other and situations that we find ourselves in.

Q: Do you feel proud of yourselves and each other?

DIANA: For Juan, of course, I feel very proud of what he's achieved and what he can achieve. We know it’s what he’s wanted and what he wants, and he is fighting for a dream.

And well, also in his studies, which is also important, that is he is going to school. And for me, I feel very proud to be representing the community of Queens, Colombians, Latinos and also women.

JUAN: For my sister, I am very proud of her. I believe that she can be an example for all the women who want to make a big impact on the sports industry. And for me, I am very proud of myself. Thanks to Queensboro, we have also grown as people and athletically.
