Storylines unfold on the field as the tournament goes on

TAMPA, Fla. - The United Soccer League (USL) Academy Cup, presented by PUMA, has seen a lot of action over the past two days at the Hillsborough County Tournament Sportsplex. With 38 games kicking off over a few hours, plenty of goals scored and storylines written.

In the battle for U17B Elite Group A, Orange County SC took on Charlotte Independence where the action was non-stop. The game ended in a 1-1 tie. After a 2-1 win, Tampa Bay United moved to the top of the table. With one game left, the group is up for grabs between TBU and Real Colorado.

On the other side of U17B Elite, two close games made the division even more competitive. North Carolina FC and NC Fusion game ended with NCFC getting the win, giving them a stronger shot of making the final. Indy Eleven was able to get a 1-0 win over Weston FC to keep the top spot in the group. The group could see Indy, NCFC, or NC Fusion go to the final based on tomorrow’s scores.

In the Premier U17B groups, three teams from Group A and Group B still have a chance to make the final: Chattanooga, South Carolina United, Real Monarchs. In Group C, there are still three teams with a chance to make it. However, with three groups in this division, only two teams can make it to the final.

For the U17G Elite Group A, OCSC and South Carolina Bantams will compete tomorrow to determine who moves on to the final. On the other side of Elite, if TBU ties or wins, they move on to represent Group B in the final. However, if Tormenta FC wins and TBU loses, the winner of the group will be determined by goal differential.

Elite U13B Group A has three possible winners to advance to the final. Indy and Charlotte have the greatest likelihood of advancing to the final, though FC Golden State still has a shot. For Group B, Inter Miami FC started off hot yesterday, but their streak was halted with a 1-1 tie with SC United. That result opened the door for either side to advance depending on tomorrow’s results.

Day 2 concluded with a USL League Two match where Tampa Bay United hosted Weston FC at the Sportsplex. The game showed two clubs that are huge supporters of the path to pros, with some of the youngest rosters across the league. This senior team match-up was the perfect opportunity to see first-hand a possible step for them to the pro level.
