Queensboro FC Academy player Jose Luis Lopez has been named in the Puerto Rico Men’s National Team squad by Head Coach Dave Sarachan that will compete next month in FIFA World Cup Qualifying, joining a group of players including those from Major League Soccer and the USL Championship.

Lopez has made two appearances to start the USL Academy League this month, and was named the club’s Player of the Game for its contest against Ironbound SC on May 15. The 18-year-old joins a defensive corps for Puerto Rico that includes current Houston Dynamo FC player Zarek Valentin and the Hartford Athletic duo of Nicolas Cardona and Giovanni Calderon, with Calderon currently a USL Academy signing to the Athletic’s Championship roster.

Puerto Rico is set to face the Bahamas on June 2 in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico and Guyana on June 8 in Georgetown, Guyana to close out the opening round of qualifying. The side has taken one point from its first two games after earning a 1-1 draw with Trinidad & Tobago in March.

Also named to the squad are Birmingham Legion FC’s Jaden Servania, formerly a USL Academy signing for Legion FC in the Championship, Memphis 901 FC’s Raul Gonzalez and the Tacoma Defiance’s Alec Diaz.
